Coral acclimation is a critical process that ensures the successful integration of corals into a new aquatic environment. This process is essential for minimizing stress and promoting the health and longevity of corals. Understanding the physiological needs of corals and the environmental parameters of their new habitat is paramount for successful acclimation.

Step 1: Visual Inspection

Inspect your new coral in the bag. We hope that your coral made it safe and sound. However, if it did not, please take a photo of the coral in the bag and follow our DOA guidelines.

Step 2: Floating

Begin by floating your coral in the closed bag for 15-20 minutes (longer time may be necessary if coral arrived at a much cooler temperature. This allows for the water in the bag to adjust to the water temperature of your aquarium. Note: Opening the bag allows CO2 to escape, causing the pH to rise and transforming the ammonium into toxic ammonia. Once your bag is opened, it is critical to transfer your coral into water from your aquarium within 5 minutes.

Step 3: Coral Dip

Even though we take many precautions against pests, we still always recommend dipping your new coral with Potassium Chloride. Although there are many dips on the market, this is the most gentle yet effective one we have found.

Step 4: Place in Tank

Place coral in tank preferably in a lower area or on a frag rack to help the coral adjust to lighting changes. Gradually move your new coral to its permanent location over 5-7 days.

Step 5: Monitor

Post-acclimation care is equally important. Regular monitoring of the coral's health and the overall water quality of the aquarium is essential. Signs of stress, such as retraction or discoloration, should be addressed promptly. Additionally, providing appropriate feeding, appropriate flow and ensuring stable water parameters will contribute to the long-term success of the coral in its new environment.

We are always available for questions regarding this process or the ideal conditions for your new corals. Please feel free to contact us with any questions!
